When the opportunity arose to purchase some of Ken Watts' work at a north east auction we absolutely jumped to it. After some furious bidding wars and panic that we were going to come away empty handed, our day ended in smiles, arms full of his wonderful paintings and a very empty wallet.
Mr Ken Watts moved from London to Jarrow in 1959 to find work as a joiner, but as an artist specialised in capturing the fine details of the streets, buildings and the usually mundane scenes such as drainpipes and fire hydrants in the North East of England. The extremely talented painter sadly died in 2014, aged 82.
Continuing to pursue his love of art, in the later years of his life Mr Watts converted a room in his house into a home studio and completed a Fine Arts Degree in Sunderland in 2007, of which he unsurprisingly graduated with First Class Honours.
This beautiful original oil painting features a usually mundane brick wall with shadow from the roof above. With lovely detail and realism, this painting most definitely deserves repeat viewing. The vibrant colours and crisp lines are reminiscent of the likes of Edward Hopper, David Hockney, Domenico Gnoli and George Tooker. Large in size and most definitely large in impact, this stunning piece of art is sure to dominate any wall.
In lovely condition for it's age with some light wear, there is the remains of a sticker on the back reading 'Shadow of...' but another title attributed by the auction house from which the work was purchased names the piece 'Extension of the Bede Gallery'.
Measures approximately 92cm wide, 72cm tall and 2cm deep.
All of our prices include VAT, please get it touch if you require a VAT receipt.
