This absolutely show stopping sideboard was designed in 1965 and taps into the essence of Danish Modern with its clean lines, functional design and expert craftsmanship.
Bernhard Pedersen & Son (Est. 1902) are a Danish furniture maker with a long and strong tradition in furniture and cabinetmaking. The furniture produced between the 1950s and 1970s is considered some of the most stunning and well-executed pieces in the company's history, and this sideboard is the perfect example of this.
In 2015, fourth generation family member Thomas Bernhard Pedersen re-established the company and started focusing exclusively on re-launching some of the exquisite sideboards designed in the mid 20th century.
The sideboard features tambour doors that roll seamlessly into the back. A technique rarely used today, that is not only pleasing to the eye, but also functionally ideal as it minimises the space needed to access the inside of the cabinet. The interior is beautifully finished with adjustable shelves on each side and a middle section consisting of three pull-out dovetail trays for added storage. The curved front edges are constructed in solid wood, as are the tambour doors, base and legs. To add extra detail to the design, the legs are pulled slightly under the sideboard to account for skirting boards, making it possible to place the piece up close to the wall. With a veneered back it can also find great use as a room divider if your space allows. The eloquent lines and high quality cabinetmaking are sure to make this piece of furniture look beautiful in any setting.
Purchased new back in the 1970s, the sideboard has been with the same owner ever since. Now fully stripped, sanded and refinished, the piece is looking absolutely beautiful once again, with the rich colour of the wood balanced and brought back to life. The tambour doors were sticking so they have been fully taken apart cleaned and put back together and run smoothly once more. As with any restored piece there are still some minor areas of light wear commensurate with age and use, including some staining inside and some splash marks and nibbling to the back veneered panel (as photographed).
One of the nicest sideboards we've had in our catalogue and one we're likely never to find again. Wherever it is placed it is sure to enhance and enrich any interior for many more years to come.
