Created by celebrated British designer Bernard Holdaway the Tomotom cardboard furniture collection was first launched to great success at the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1966.
All designed around a circular theme, the range comprised of chairs, tables and lamps coated with tough enamel spray with a high gloss finish. The range was called Tomotom because of the allusion to tom-tom drums. The first collection was limited to pillar box red and royal blue but soon extended to black, white, green, yellow and purple. Initially conceived as cheap throwaway furniture and sold by mail order, the collection struck a chord with the young, fashion conscious families of the late sixties and established itself as an instant Pop classic.
Due to the furniture being made from cardboard there aren't many examples on the market, with pieces becoming very collectable.
This gorgeous Tomotom side table in black is the perfect item for any interior. A brilliant example of mid 20th century design history that is within the V&A's permanent collection.
As to be expected there are numerous areas of wear and tear, including marks, scuffs, scratches and chipping to the enamel coating, all as photographed. All this however simply adds to its appeal and charm. This particular piece features a little bit of damage to the central shelf. This has been glued but we would recommend placing light items on this shelf only to avoid further damage.
Please note we also have another one listed.
Measures approximately 73cm tall and 36cm wide.
