This stunning black Herbert Terry & Sons Model 1209 Anglepoise lamp is an absolute design classic and one which in our opinion no home should be without. This particular model designed by George Carwardine was first introduced in 1933, proof that good design really can stand the test of time. This large and oversized lamp looks just as modern today as it did 80 years from its first manufacture.
As an engineer the inadequacies of available lighting products were all too clear to Carwardine, prompting him to set about developing a frictionless mechanism that could balance and direct light to any position. Essentially, he wanted to create a lamp that was as versatile as a human arm, having instant flexibility and, more elusively, the ability to hold the chosen position all at the touch of a finger.
Designed originally as commercial task lighting, however the market for home and office use soon became apparent.
In general good condition for its age, with the usual wear including some chipping and scratching to the paint, marks, slight dinting to the cone shade and some light tarnish to the chrome fixings.
The lamp has been fully rewired with 3 core twisted antique gold flex and has been fitted with a new chrome lamp holder and 3 pin UK plug.
Due to the many adjustable positions of the lamp, it's quite a tricky one to measure but here's a few approximate measurements to get you going, feel free to get in touch should you require any more. At the tallest point with everything standing to attention/upright, the light measures 115cm while the very heavy base of the lamp measures 24cm square. Finally, the cone measures 14cm long with a diameter of 14cm.
