This beautiful Metro Sound ST.20 stereo amplifier and pair of speakers is the perfect item to add some mid-20th century sophistication into your home. Much more aesthetically pleasing than your standard new hifi system and speakers, making them a stand alone piece of furniture in their own right.
This particular model was selected back in the 1970s to be included in the Design Centre London's design index, with adverts at the time stating that the amplifier boasted outstanding performance equal to products selling for twice and three times its original selling price and was one of the best buys for quality and value on the high fidelity market.
The speakers especially really set this system apart, the teak casing, patterned fabric fronts and tall black legs all help create a highly stylish and desirable look. We think the legs have possibly been added by a previous owner but they sure do look good as a result. Refurbished, tested and and in full working order, they emit a warm and rich sound once more.
There are three ports to the back, turner, phono and tape. We recommend plugging any external audio device (i.e. laptop / phone) into the Tape input. The others are unfortunately a little crackly.
The speaker cables and two pin DIN plug terminals are brand new. Also included in the sale is a five pin DIN plug cable and 3.5mm Jack to 2 RCA twin phono adapter that can be plugged into a phone, laptop, or bluetooth converter, meaning it's fully compatible with today's technology.
In lovely condition, the speaker veneer has been fully stripped, sanded and refinished. That said, there are still some knocks and bumps commensurate with age and use. There are also some chips to the paintwork of the legs which we have left visible, as in our opinion it simply adds to the charm and personality of the speakers. The casing fabric features a couple of light stains and pulls, this however does not detract from their overall look and is not very noticeable.
The amplifier itself has been thoroughly cleaned and the wood oiled. There is some light staining to the top veneer along with an old factory fill to the front right corner. One of the dials is also missing it's chrome cap, as can be seen from the photographs.
Each speaker measures approximately 29.5cm wide, 27.5cm deep and 97cm tall while the amp itself measures approximately 39cm wide, 25.5cm deep and 9cm tall.
