Founded in 1906 by Virginia tobacco producers, American of Martinsville furniture line consisted of only bedroom furniture. In the early 1920s the company added dining room furniture and began to expand its offerings through a number of diverse styles.
In the 1950s, as the company grew, so did American of Martinsville's reputation for styling and design leadership who are now regarded as one of the most esteemed American furniture producers of the Mid-century era.
Today, the company specialises in producing furniture for the American hotel and healthcare industries. Open a dresser drawer the next time you stay in a hotel and chances are, you'll see an American of Martinsville logo.
Featuring an unusual and distinctive, multi-directional veneer on each drawer front along with the company's signature inlaid aluminium X's on the top of the drawers. This beautiful set of walnut drawers are a must for anybody wanting a solid, statement piece of furniture.
Beautifully detailed and proportioned, the drawers are of very high quality. Typically, the company used oak as their secondary wood inside the drawers and gave preferential treatment to walnut as the primary wood.
Possibly imported from the USA back in the 60s, we'd be surprised if these drawers had more than one previous owner. There are very few pieces of mid-century American of Martinsville furniture for sale online in the UK right now, most likely as the cost to import them back in the 60s was so high. We've also yet to find an example of a similar piece for sale at the time of writing and for that reason, we do not expect for these drawers to be in stock for long.
We've fully stripped and sanded the drawers with the wonderful Wynn Griffiths and Tarr restorers improving them even further. Finishing them to the highest possible standard and ensuring they look their very best for their new home. As with any vintage furniture, although restored there are still some signs of wear commensurate with age and as photographed.
With a clean, minimalist design, these drawers are sure to blend seamlessly with vintage or contemporary décor, while offering up plenty of storage.
