Despite being praised in various brutalist architecture publications, the eye catching octagonal building in which it once resided in was sadly demolished in 2022.

Thankfully though we were able to salvage some of the benches and chairs, preserving some of our city's mid 20th century history.

They were designed so that when the meeting chamber was full, people could sit on the benches but also stand and lean behind them making standing a little more comfortable, and therefore maximising space in the room itself. It's a shame that there are no photographs of them in situ, however we have included some brilliant photographs of a small section of the room they came from photographed back in 1964.

The Civic Centre was opened on 12 March 1964. The main office block building is 11 stories high and stands 135ft above ground level.

While the building itself still sparks much debate over its design, the exterior and remarkable interior were built with some of the best quality materials available at the time which is not very well known and is something as Carlisle residents we're very proud of.

With original upholstery that is in general good condition with some small areas of wear commensurate with age and use, including scuffs, small tears and marks as photographed. The fabric underneath has been replaced. The steel legs have all been polished and ridded of as much rust as possible. Finally the solid teak back rests have also been stripped, sanded and re-oiled, making them look the best they can.

The benches would have originally been screwed to the floor, as they're heavy we don't think this is necessary. There is a slight wobble from side to side but nothing that makes them unstable. If you do wish to screw them down they will also come with some extra angled braces.

A handsome piece of furniture that is sure to look great in various interior settings, and also a great piece of our local history.

Measures approximately 184cm long, 57cm deep and 122cm tall, with a 46cm seat height.

Please take a look at our other items as we have two in stock all together along with chairs from the same building.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/0844/0925/files/Vintage_Black_Vinyl_Steel_and_Teak_Bench_from_Carlisle_s_Civic_Centre_Council_Chamber_One.jpg?v=1777041923
https://absolutelynice.co.uk/products/vintage-black-vinyl-steel-and-teak-bench-from-carlisles-civic-centre-council-chamber-1
